I don't use this all the time, but when you need it you really need it. July 26, 2010 Charles E. Pike (Charlotte, NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an item that might stay in your bag and not on the camera much of the time. That is, if your shooting where there is shade to shade the screen of your camera. But when you need this, you really need this. I bought my GF1 because I only shoot in RAW, and I don't worry about JPEG. I shoot in RAW, because I sell my work to magazines, and I need the best file out of the camera that I can get. Lots of the time, I am shooting where the sun isn't directly on the screen on the back of the camera, and so I don't need the LVF1, but when you move to direct sun light, then you really are going to need this. Works great, and you could keep it mounted on the camera if you wanted to. There is a button on the side of the viewfinder that when you push, it moves between the camera screen or the LVF1 being what you view with. What that means, if that you don't need to remove it to use the screen on the camera.
Essential if you have a GF1 July 24, 2010 Paul Jennings (Arlington, MA, US) Being an old-style photographer I prefer to compose in the viewfinder rather than guess what it looks like on the screen on the back of the camera. While the resolution could be greater, this is an adequate finder for use with the GF1, and I applaud Panasonic for making it available.
Essential, but room for improvement July 21, 2010 JudyM (Maryland) I would like to love this accessory, but "love" might be a tad overkill. It does work, and it does allow me to compose, focus and check settings in bright light. After trying to use my GF1 on vacation without the LVF1, taking photographs became a point and shoot affair in a far too literal sense. With the LCD screen blacking out in the bright sun, all I could do is point the camera in the general direction and hope for the best. This is where the LVF1 is worth its weight in gold. When used with the system's autofocus lenses, it's wonderfully bright and sharp and puts the fun back into daylight photography. I purchased the Gf1 to use with manual focus lenses from my 35mm, however. This is where the Gf1 and the versatility of the micro four thirds system really shines and where the LVF1 leaves me wishing for something better, something as precise as the ground glass in my 35mm. You can focus manual lenses with the LVF1, but the low resolution makes fine focusing difficult. Overall, it's worth the price just to be able to use the camera easily outdoors and I highly recommend it, but I think Panasonic should be capable of coming up with something better.
A Must For This Camera July 19, 2010 K. Nowack (San Francisco) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a must for the GF1. It's bright, large enough and more than adequate for FRAMING THE SHOT. You just have to trust that the image is vastly better then what you're seeing in the EVF. It has all the exposure info and it's easy to read. I have no problem shooting with this EVF. I, too, don't understand the whining about the image quality. The GF1 with the EVF really pull the the micro 4/3 concept together. A camera a tad bigger than a P&S that takes DSLR quality photos AND has a bright viewfinder with all the info - essentially a really small DSLR - what the micro 4/3 was supposed to be about.
A must in day light and street photography July 12, 2010 Richard Lin (San Diego, CA United States) Yes, it's grainy and you can't really manully focus because of that. But the LCD screen of GF-1 is near useless in bright sun. As such, this viewfinder is a must if you shoot in bright sunny days.
The fact that it tilts up 90 degrees makes GF-1 an even greater street photography camera. Candid shots are easier to do. Low angles shots are a breeze. It really makes photography fun again.
